When Moonies Lose it: Sailor Moon Roundup

Sailor Moon Anime, Manga, Movie, Live Action and Musical (Sera Myu) News. "Due to the potential offensive nature of a comment Fred Ladd made during the interview, we caution readers before they click the link below to read this. We at Moon Chase! would like to state that we in no way believe that any nation has a specific way of thinking about the cartoons that they make, especially when it comes to the nature of violence in a cartoon. Our staff is multi-culturally diverse and we are the last people on the planet to demean another culture or race over anything - especially over the cartoons that they make. We are only stating what was said in the interview. "

That's how the staff at Moonchase introduced their rather interesting article on an interview with Fred Ladd who was involved in the English adaption of Sailor Moon. I'm not making a personal attack against that website because normally it's a very good source of information but this "warning" of their's is no only misleading but an insult to Fred Ladd who says nothing racist of the sort. He even mentions in the interview that he doesn't want to sound racist!

When I read the warning I assumed the interview would be full of racial slurs or sexually explicit language. What do we get? One line of dialogue on how Fred Ladd, in 1995 had never seen a cartoon series for children with as much violence as Sailor Moon. An opinion that is completely his own, also referring to his personal career in the industry but yet is a completely normal impression of the genre at that moment in time.

By their very nature Japanese cartoons are more violent that American ones simply due to the different culture, different parenting styles and a lack of a tv rating system. Yes there is violence in American cartoons but in all seriousness have a look at the first two seasons of Sailor Moon. Look at the episode where Nephlite dies. Can you find an example of a similarly graphic scene in an American cartoon made before 1995? Not likely.

What Fred Ladd said is not offensive in the least and as much as I appreciate fans defending the series I would like to remind everyone not to go too far with their assumptions.
