Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Celebration!

It's amazing what happens in a few hours! When I posted this morning about the new DVDs, Toei's main website (which included the official Sailor Moon Channel site) was down for maintenance.

Well it's back online now and while nothing major has happened on the Sailor Moon Channel or Toei's main page something HUGE has happened for Sailor Moon!!!

Toei has started Sailor Moon's 20th Anniversary!!!

They've created a new special 20th Anniversary website that not only has the release dates for all the new DVD box sets but also features all the cover art as well!!!

The official dates for Sailor Moon's 20th Anniversary are February 2012 for the manga and the 7th of March 2012 for the anime.

The release of the DVD Boxes are spaced out really well, with one being released every month or so throughout 2010. Here's the release schedule:

Sailor Moon Box 1: 11th Dec 2009
Sailor Moon Box 2: 21st Jan 2010
Sailor Moon R Box 1: 21st Mar 2010
Sailor Moon R Box 2: 21st Apr 2010
Sailor Moon S Box 1: 21st Jun 2010
Sailor Moon S Box 2: 21st Jul 2010
Sailor Moon SuperS Box 1: 21st Sep 2010
Sailor Moon SuperS Box 2: 21st Oct 2010
Sailor Stars Box 1: December 2010 (date pending)
Sailor Stars Box 2: January 2011 (date pending)

The descriptions say the episodes have been remastered though the previous Region 2 releases were also remastered. Not sure if it'll be a different image or not but I'll definitely be buying these and will be doing comparisons once I get my copy!

The price is also extremely cheap for a Japanese DVD box set with them ranging from 9400 yen to 12,000 yen per box. Some Japanese box sets sell for about 40,000 yen so this is a really pleasant surprise especially considering the individual DVDs previously released cost about 4,000 yen and had 6 episodes per disk.

Each box features half a season's episodes and comes with a slip case (left image on site) which holds the multi-disk case (right image on site).

Interestingly enough, or maybe just a coincidence, the slip cases look awfully similar to the live action's Moon Light Real Girl CD Box Set.

Speaking of which, no word on the live action's re-release though it does celebrate it's 10th Anniversary in 2013 along with the Sailor Moon musicals who turn 20 in that year. Also no word yet on a manga re-release in Japan or elsewhere though personally I think it's only a matter of time.

This is a very exciting time for Sailor Moon fans and I can't wait to see what else we have in store!

GO! GO! 20th ANNIVERSARY!
MOONLIGHT LEGEND FOREVER!!!

Update: Amazon links for first two boxes added!

Yeah, this is GREAT!...for Japan.

Yeah, I'm still a bitter man. Thanks for asking.

esahC, this gives us three years to learn Japanese and head overseas! I think we should plan a meetup. Who's game?

Wow the boxes look amazing!! Can't wait to buy these. (^_^)

Hehe love the Moonlight Legend Forever part since my Sailor Moon domain is moonlightlegend.com

When is the U.S. going to get all the Sailor Moon goodness?

Cool, I Love the boxes, but I would love to be released on Blu Ray discs, 20 years is a long time. I hope the quality is better than others DVD ^-^

So many comments! I love it when you guys are excited too!!!

I love the design of the boxes! Can't wait to pick these babies up!

FUNimation (or whoever) better get a move on with the Region 1 release or everyone's just going to buy these instead!

I CAN'T WAIT!!!! ^-^ Is there any word on when you can preorder these DVDs? They are such a better deal than the R2s..too bad I couldn't wait! Oh yes, I am so going to go to Japan during the anniversary celebration!

Just so you know, these are R2 DVDs as well.

As for Preorders, they're online at YesAsia but Amazon.jp has cheaper prices (sometimes 4000 yen off for box sets!) and super fast shipping so am waiting for them to add these boxes to their listings.

As soon as they do, I'll update this post with the links and add them to the Moonkitty.net's Shopping Guide (see green link box at top of page).

Stay tuned!!!

Yes, lol, I did know that these are R2s as well, I guess I just meant they are cheaper than trying to get all the separate DVDs..I'm just so excited!!! Not thinking straight lol. Looking forward to the links...I'm on TOEI's website now, and I think you can preorder there too...but I don't know how to work it very well! ^-^*

Yeah you can buy them on the Toei site for FULL price but I'm not even going to try that. Amazon is always cheaper and what's really cool is that several times when I've preordered something on Amazon.jp I get it a few days before it's actual release date!

I am so tempted to get these you have no idea. Guess it is to much to hope that they would have english subs? I can dream. Come on re-release them in the US! Even tho I already own the old DVD's from ADV and Pioneer lol. So lucky I picked those up when they first came out here. Still working on my English manga hunt.

Wait, I just did a conversion of the price. 12,000 yen is $130 US? Damn that is expensive. Is that for each box? Cause that is like.... a rip-off lol. If anything it should be like $60 a season.

Expensive by Western standards, yes. But trust me it's a bargain in the Japanese market. The first Card Captor Sakura Blue Ray (35 eps) cost 81,900 YEN!!!

This is so cool..I hope they do more for the anniversary X3!

Me too! I wonder if they'll do CD releases or something?

Fingers crossed that they'll cancel Pretty Cure this year and start a new Sailor Moon anime in it's place in 2010!!! (That's my prediction anyway!)

p.s. Just preordered the first two DVD boxes! YEAH!!! (links added to post!)

They really look so nice! I'd be much happier if they featured new cover art though... But anyways. I'm hesitating whether to buy them or not since I already bought all of the R2s - I do want to support Sailor Moon but if it's the same masters it would be kind of unnecessary. Maybe Toei will put some extras or something that wasn't included in the previous R2 releases, so that more people buy them. ^^ I'm realy excited about the current events around Sailor Moon in Japan and the rest of the world!! :D

I'm def buying them and will do a comparison once they're out to let you know if they're different. ;)

Pretty psyched for the 20th Anniversary, and I can't wait to read the comparisons, Brad.

Odd sidenote, speaking of if they'd re-release the Manga for the Anniversary--I am not sure. Last I knew of the Manga's re-release, it was in light of the PGSM series, in which Naoko-sama did new artwork for the re-released Mangas. The covers for those: awesome'ness.

That said, to the Anniversary in which we Moonies just can't wait to celebrate!!!
